Setting Up Your New Employee Account

Welcome aboard. This guide covers everything you need to get your account set up and secured on your first day.

You’ll receive a welcome email from your IT admin with your username and a temporary password. Use these to sign in at your organisation’s usual sign-in page (typically portal.office.com for Microsoft 365 accounts).

You’ll be asked to set a new password immediately. Choose something you don’t use anywhere else — a password manager is the easiest way to keep track of it.

Password requirements:

  • At least 12 characters
  • A mix of upper and lower case letters, numbers, and symbols
  • Not a variation of your name, username, or company name

Enabling multi-factor authentication (MFA)

Straight after your first password change, you’ll be prompted to set up MFA. This adds a second step to logging in — usually a code from an app on your phone — so a stolen password alone isn’t enough to get into your account.

  1. Install the Microsoft Authenticator app on your phone.
  2. When prompted during sign-in, choose Mobile app as your verification method.
  3. Scan the QR code shown on screen with the app.
  4. Approve the test notification to confirm it’s working.

If your temporary password doesn’t work, or you don’t receive the welcome email, contact support rather than trying repeatedly — several failed attempts can temporarily lock the account.
